How to Remove Background from a Photo for Passport / Visa Applications (Free, Browser)

Indian passport, US visa, Schengen visa — they all require a plain white background. Here's how to get one in 30 seconds without Photoshop.

You took a passport photo against a beige wall. The portal demands a "plain white background." Now what?

You don't need Photoshop. You don't need a studio. You don't need to pay an online service ₹100 per image. You can do it in your browser in 30 seconds.

The 3-step fix

1. Open the Background Remover

The tool runs entirely in your browser — your photo never gets uploaded anywhere. The first run downloads ~30 MB of model files (one-time); subsequent runs are instant.

2. Drop in your photo

Click or drag a JPG / PNG of yourself. The AI detects the subject (your face + shoulders) and removes everything else.

3. Pick the white background preset

The tool offers four backgrounds: - Transparent (PNG output, useful as input to other tools) - White — for Indian passport, PAN, most exams - Light blue — for US visa, some embassies - Custom color — pick anything

Click Download JPG and you're done.

What about the edges?

The AI handles fine detail (hair edges, glasses) much better than a manual selection. If you do see harsh edges, it's usually because the original photo was low-resolution or had heavy compression artifacts. Take a fresh photo at higher resolution and try again.

Combine with the resizer

After removing the background, the photo is still 3-5 MB and the wrong dimensions. Run it through the relevant resizer:

- Indian Passport Photo — 350×350 px, up to 100 KB - PAN Card Photo — 213×213 px, 10-20 KB - UPSC Photo — 350×350 px, 20-300 KB - SSC CGL Photo — 200×230 px, 20-50 KB

The combined workflow: remove background → resize for form → upload. Total time: under a minute.

Quality tips for the original photo

The AI is good but not magic. For best results:

- Even lighting on the face — no harsh shadows - Some contrast between you and the background — a beige shirt against a beige wall confuses the model - Front-facing, neutral expression — passport rules anyway - High enough resolution — at least 1000 × 1000 pixels original

If you provide a clean original, the AI cutout looks indistinguishable from a studio photo.
